What is Kashmir Saffron?

Kashmir Saffron is a registered geographical indication in the Indian GI Registry. For a buyer, the key distinction is between a documented geographical identity and the condition, authenticity and grade of a specific saffron lot. An inquiry should define the material being purchased, the analysis needed to assess it, and how the lot will be protected after packing. This is research guidance, not an offer of an authenticated ExportsPod shipment.

Registered origin and GI scope

The GI Registry lists Kashmir Saffron as registered with Jammu & Kashmir as its geographical area. The registry entry does not by itself establish where a particular jar or bulk pack was grown, processed or packed. Require a traceable origin chain before accepting a lot-level claim.

A GI registration concerns a named product and geographical area. It does not establish that an ExportsPod supplier is an authorized user or that a particular lot qualifies. Read the GI Registry's practice manual.

Product-specific buyer checklist

  • Describe whether the requirement is for whole stigmas and define allowed style, colour and visible foreign material.
  • Ask for a written grading basis, sample size and sealed reference sample.
  • Specify moisture protection, light protection, pack size and tamper evidence.
  • Agree how any difference between the sample and delivered lot will be resolved.

Tests and records to ask for

  • Request a lot-specific authenticity and quality analysis from a suitable laboratory, with the method stated.
  • Check sampling, sealing, laboratory identity and test date rather than relying on a marketing grade name.
  • Ask for contaminant or residue testing appropriate to the importing market and intended food use.

Commercial and export questions

  • Ask for producer identity, traceability and any applicable GI authorization before a GI-linked purchase claim.
  • Set the destination, pack size, transit conditions and insurance requirements in the RFQ.
  • Confirm customs classification and import documentation for the exact packed form before dispatch.

Questions by intended use

Food service, ingredient blending and retail packing have different sample and pack needs. Tell the sourcing team how the saffron will be used so the acceptance test can be matched to the order.

Buyer questions

Does the GI record authenticate a saffron sample?

No. It records the geographical indication. A sample needs its own origin chain and suitable lot-specific analysis.

What should a buyer put in the RFQ?

Specify whole-stigma requirements, grade basis, pack size, destination and the method of authenticity testing to be used.
